The Pittsburg Steelers found out how a bad kicker can destroy your season while the Baltimore Ravens discovered that kicking could be the key to salvaging their winless start to the season. The Ravens came into the game with a self-destructive team that got them off to a 0-3 start. The team has been struggling on both sides of the ball, and many would claim that the problems start and end with head coach Jim Harbaugh. He play calling has been lackluster this season and the normally disciplined Ravens seem to be in a different galaxy when lining up against the opposition. But due to Steelers kicker Josh Scobee missing two field goals that could have won the game for the team, the Ravens hung around and eventually dispatched them in overtime.
Ravens kicker Justin Tucker was the hero that dealt the final blow to the Steelers, and stopped what could have been the most disastrous season for the franchise post Ray Lewis’s retirement. Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin took it on the chin and didn’t play the blame game, instead setting the focus to himself and the play calling. But the entire story is that the Ravens beat a lifetime rival that was playing them with a backup 30 something quarterback in Mike Vick and a kicker in Scobee that was having a freakishly unlucky game. There really isn’t much to celebrate here for the squad, as they are well on their way to a bad season while missing the playoffs. Scobee, who was acquired from Jacksonville for a sixth-round pick, is now the 3rd kicker to be shuffled out due to performance issues or injury this season. Free agent Chris Boswell replaces him, and to say that they will be watching him closely would be an understatement.
Both Peyton Manning and Tom Brady will attest that they owe part of their Super Bowl wins to a consistent kicker, so why is it still fashionable in the NFL to make fun of the kicker? But the Ravens have far worse troubles to deal with even with this win, and even with a consistent kicker. The Steelers are fine and will make it into the playoffs where they are expected to make some noise, even with their shuffling of kickers. The Ravens on the other hand need a complete team rebuild that not even their magical kicker can save them from, as this is going to be a tank of a season.
