Jess Glynne ‘I Cry When I Laugh’ Album Review

On August 21, 2015, rising pop superstar Jess Glynne released her debut album entitled I Cry When I Laugh. This record was the first from the UK artist who rose to fame, prominence, and success over the past few years with hit singles she collaborated on including the number one single Rather Beby Clean Bandit and featuring Jess. I Cry When I Laughis the perfect debut album for a pop star; the album is light, inspiring, empowering, emotional and deep at times, and full of catchy hooks and groovy beats. The entire record showcases Glynnes artistic ability as her voice shines throughout the album, especially on the heart-touching track Take Me Home,a striking piano ballad that will leave you thinking of reminiscing of your greatest love.

The North American edition of the album features eleven tracks, including Jesscollaboration with Clean Bandit. On each track except the aforementioned, Glynne showcases her writing talent as she co-wrote each song.

The opening Gave Me Somethingintroduces the sound of the album in an accurate manner with a piano-driven beat and a large chorus, led by Glynnes powerful voice on the hook. As the album transitions into Hold My Hand, the albums biggest single in the United States, we hear a traditional pop song that is as inspiring as it is beautiful. Once again, prominent piano is evident throughout the track which carries throughout the album as a whole, creating a vivid melodic mixture between traditional and modern pop music sounds.

Jess maintains the inspiring and empowering tone of the record on tracks such as Aint Got Far To Go(one of my personal favorites), Dont Be So Hard On Yourself, and No Rights No Wrongs. If you are looking for an emotional pick-me-up, these tracks are just for you as Jess sings to you and lifts you up, letting you know you can do anything you set your mind to.

You Can Find Mehas characteristics of reflecting 80s electro-pop and is simply a fun tune. A similar sound is noticed on the albums closing track Why Me,a song that also features an electronic synthesizer beat and a trance-influenced rhythm.

The debut album by UK pop star Jess Glynne, I Cry When I Laugh,is a brilliant record that is catchy, fun, and easy to listen to. This album will launch Jess into an even further career and will be the basis and foundation upon which a solid musical career is soon to be established.
